At the end of the day, many people find themselves standing in front of the open refrigerator, pondering its contents and willing them to form some sort of meal that will please the whole family. Although I do try to plan my family’s meals ahead of time, there are bound to be days when I’m just not sure what to cook for dinner so that all three of us will enjoy the meal together. On days like these, I make breakfast for dinner.
Whether you opt for scrambled eggs and bacon, an omelette on toast or a pub-style fry-up, here are five reasons why breakfast for dinner is the solution to many problems faced by families at dinner time.
  1. Breakfast foods are flexible enough to suit a multitude of healthy diets and food preferences. Eggs can be cooked to suit all kinds of tastes, and contain just 70 calories each (getcracking.ca). Breakfast for dinner can easily be made up of foods from every major food group, providing healthy options for family members of all ages.
  2. Eggs cook up quickly! For busy families, cooking up an omelette is a great way to use up the bits and pieces of vegetables or leftover ham in the fridge. Allowing kids to choose their own omelette ingredients is a fabulous way to get them involved in breakfast for dinner, too!
  3. Breakfast for dinner can provide either a nice, light dinner option or a completely filling meal. A side of freshly sliced fruit balances breakfast for dinner in a light way, while a side of baked beans will satisfy a more hearty appetite.
  4. Breakfast for dinner can easily satisfy even the pickiest eaters. Include fresh, multi-grain bread or toast along with oven-roasted potatoes for small children to dip into ketchup. Food served up on family-style platters will allow everyone in the family to choose what they like.
  5. Cooking breakfast for dinner can break any family out of the “what’s for dinner” rut. Instead of calling for takeout, scrambling some eggs while the bacon fries and the bread toasts is a great way to reset the meal plan.
