Just in time for Valentine’s Day - Our Favourite Romantic Movies
In honour of Valentine’s Day, the team at Harmony Village put together our Top 10 favourite lovey-dovey movies of all time. If you’re looking for a great way to spend February 14th, why not grab some popcorn and one of these classics!
1. Casablanca
Considered the best known romance film of all time, Casablanca is the perfect story of unrequited love taking place during World War II. American, Rick Blaine runs the hottest nightclub in Morocco and one night, underground rebel leader Victor Laszlo walks into his club looking for help to flee the country. Much to Rick's surprise, Lazslo comes with his wife Ilsa, Rick's long-lost love. As the story unfolds, Rick is faced with a tough choice. As they say - “Here’s looking at you, kid.”
2. When Harry Met Sally
The ultimate romantic comedy - Sally Albright and Harry Burns meet as college students, eventually becoming friends and then falling in love. The movie examines the old-age question - Can men and women really be “just friends?”
3. Gone with the Wind
One of the most epic and iconic love stories of all time and follows the life of Scarlet O’Hara during the American Civil War. The saga centres around Scarlet’s many love affairs and ultimately her relationship with the dashing Rhett Butler. You need ample time to watch this one – at 238 minutes (well over 3 hours long), we suggest you settle in for the long haul
4. Ghost
Ghost is the story of Sam (Patrick Swayze) and Molly (Demi Moore), a young couple deeply in love. When Sam is tragically murdered, his ghost returns to protect Molly and help her find his killer. If you’ve seen this one, you may remember a certain pottery making scene that brought “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers to a whole new level.
5. Bridges of Madison County
Bridges of Madison County recounts the whirlwind romance of photographer Robert Kincaid and housewife Francesca Johnson in the 1960s, and features the always wonderful Meryl Streep and the equally talented Clint Eastwood. “This kind of certainty comes but just once in a lifetime.”
6. The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride is a classic tale of love and adventure. When the beautiful Buttercup (engaged to the detestable Prince Humperdinck) is kidnapped and held against her will - it is up to Westley, her childhood beau, to save her. “Since the invention of the kiss there have been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.”
7. The Notebook
Allie (Rachel McAdams) is a city girl from a wealthy family and Noah (Ryan Gosling) is a country boy. Though seemingly mismatched, the two fall desperately in love and we follow the ups and downs of their relationship until the very end. “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird”
8. Before Sunrise
American tourist Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and French student Celine (Julie Delpy) meet by chance on the train from Budapest to Vienna. Sensing a connection, Jesse asks Celine to depart the train and spend the day with him in Vienna. In the course of their 14-hour relationship, the two explore the city falling in love. The next day, Jesse must leave back to the US and they promise to return to Vienna in six months. If you want to know what happens between Jesse and Celine, watch the sequels - Before Sunset and After Midnight.
Have we sparked your romantic imagination? Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your loved ones from the whole Harmony Village team!
