HARMONY VILLAGE LAKE SIMCOE CHALLENGES GEORGIAN COLLEGE FINE ART STUDENTS TO ART COMPETITION
In art and architecture, behind every masterpiece is a creative individual who challenges the norms of design and allows their own inspiration to shine through in order to make a statement. With Leonardo Divinci, it was the Mona Lisa and Frank Gehry, the Billbao Museum. As we embark on the transformation of the Lake Simcoe waterfront with Harmony Village, we strive for the integration of great architecture and art. Rather than sourcing art externally, we wanted to support local talent by challenging local Georgian College Fine Art students to bring a significant art concept to Harmony Village.
Therefore, we are excited to launch an Art Installation Competition in collaboration with Georgian College. We believe that art is fashioned at the hands of inspired and imaginative individuals and we want Harmony Village Lake Simcoe to serve as the canvas for local budding artists to develop their skills.
The Art Installation Competition is centered on supporting local students from the Georgian College Fine Arts program by encouraging them to push their artistic boundaries and providing them with the opportunity to see their work go from classroom to showroom. Each entrant will be challenged to design a decorative fixture that will be hung from the ceiling in the centre of the Harmony Village Lake Simcoe Presentation Gallery at 75 Bradford Street. We are so excited to be working with Georgian College and are thrilled that we can help provide their students with this unique opportunity. We truly feel that engaging young adults helps foster community engagement – one of our most prominent pillars of our development.
Students will have until February 6th, 2013 to submit their applications, which must include drawings of their designs, their CV and a scaled model, including a 3D element that will help the judges to envision the proposed installation. Lastly, we require a written rationale that explains the plan for their design, including: materials, plans for construction/installation, relation to the nature-based theme and other artistic concerns.
Following the submissions, their work will be judged by an expert panel that includes representatives from Georgian College and the Fine Arts program, as well as preeminent design consultants and community members. All design submissions will be evaluated based on: originality of concept (40%), appropriateness of theme/materials reflective of Harmony Village (20%), realistic potential for installation (20%) and quality of presentation (20%).
To help the winning design become a reality, we are awarding $5,000 to the winning student(s) to cover the cost of materials and construction in order for them to build their art installation. Giving the winning teams enough time to build their masterpiece, we look forward to hosting a special event, which will be held in late spring to unveil the installation within the Harmony Village Presentation Gallery.
